CHESTERFIELD — The municipal tax rate will remain steady at about 9 cents per $100 of assessed property value, under the proposed $2.1 million budget introduced by the Chesterfield Township Committee last week.

A homeowner with property assessed at the average township value of $195,000 paid about $178 last year in local purpose taxes.
The owner of a home assessed at this year’s average in the township, $207,000, will pay $186 under the proposed 2001 budget.
The tax rate has held steady at around the 9-cent mark for the past 11 years.
Mayor Brian Kelly said the township will use some of its anticipated $625,000 surplus to prevent an increase in the tax rate. Under the budget, $207,000 would be raised by taxes, slightly more than last year’s $199,000 tax levy.
A public hearing on the budget will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 12.
In other business, the Township Committee also passed a resolution endorsing the Route 206 Farmbelt Smart Growth Planning Initiative sponsored by county freeholders. Mayor Kelly announced the appointment of Dick Lange, Joe Malison, Larry Durr and Don Czehut to the committee, which will consist of 52 members drawn from the 13 municipalities included in the study.
