NBC golf squad shoots down first victory

The Northern Burlington County Regional High School boys’ varsity golf team, ironically, had one of its worst rounds of the season against Burlington City at the Rancocas Valley golf course on Tuesday. Still, Northern’s 178 score was more than good enough to top City’s 202 tally and produce the Greyhounds’ first win of the season.

The Greyhounds had shot well for most of the year, but previously had run into three very formidable teams. The Blue Devils, while not a bad squad, were a nice change of pace for Northern. Matt Beers led all NBC scorers with a 40. Eric Smylie was not far behind with a 43. NBC’s Andrew Madison and Wolverton each posted scores of 47. While Madison struggled with his in-between game, his short game saved him.
"I was putting good today (Tuesday)," noted Madison. With NBC’s head coach Charlie Pirrello away in Dallas, Jack Lukis coached the Greyhounds to the win.
The Greyhounds had actually had a much better day last Thursday against Rancocas Valley. Unfortunately, Rancocas Valley won that meeting by a score of 160-170. Matt Beers posted an outstanding 38 score for the Greyhounds. Andrew Madison (43), Rob Petras (44) and Matt Brown (45) also kept their numbers pretty low, but Rancocas Valley was just too powerful to beat.
NBC’s home match versus Burlington Township, scheduled for last Wednesday, was rained out. The Greyhounds are scheduled to be off until Wednesday when they are scheduled at Pemberton.
Despite a 1-3 record, the Greyhounds are all keeping their averages in the mid to low 40’s for the most part. That’s all a coach can ask for at this point.

The good news is the Bordentown Regional High School boys’ varsity golf team shot its lowest round of the year against New Egypt on Tuesday. The bad news is New Egypt won, 191-213, at Hanover. Still the match had a huge upside for the Scotties. In fact, Bordentown head coach Dave Dudzinski was extremely pleased with his club’s 213 score.
"I’m starting to get the guys who are shooting consistent," said Dudzinski, who didn’t know what to expect out of players in the early going this season.
Eric Arrojo, whose game is constantly improving, shot a 51 for Bordentown while teammate Dan Caldwell shot a very respectable 52. Sean Mahoney (54) and Matt Brayton (56) have also made great strides in their game.
He (Mahoney) was up in the 60’s and now he has a 54," said Dudzinski, who was proud his freshman was able to trim 6 strokes off his score in less than a week.
Bordentown couldn’t compete against New Egypt because New Egypt had two of its players shoot in the 40’s on Tuesday.
Last Thursday Bordentown got a lesson on what it is like to play golf on a rain-soaked course.
"That course (Springfield) was unbelievable. There was not a dry spot on the whole course. You couldn’t do anything. There were no bounces," said Coach Dudzinski, whose Scotties shot a 246 to Burlington Township’s 188.
With the rain coming down in buckets last Wednesday, the Scotties didn’t even bother showing up at Holy Cross’ home golf course. However, for some reason the Lancers hung around in the rain and waited to play. No decision has been made yet as to whether Bordentown will have to forfeit that contest or if it will be rescheduled or just considered a rain out.
Coach Dudzinski would love to see his team shoot more golf without getting wet or cold. "Golf is no fun when you’re playing in the pouring rain," noted Dudzinski.
The Scotties, who are still in search of their first victory, are scheduled to host Rancocas Valley today. Then on Monday they are scheduled at Burlington City. They are getting better all the time.
