Sarah S. McAlpin

Sarah Sage McAlpin of Princeton died Sunday at home. She was 99.
She attended The Chapin School and Miss Porter’s School, class of 1920.
She married Gustav L. Stewart Jr. in 1924. They had two sons and lived in Short Hills. Following their divorce in 1940, she married David H. McAlpin in 1942 and settled in Princeton.
She was a former member and chairwoman of the occupational therapy committee at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York; former director and recording secretary of Garden Club of America; former chairman of the Committee for International Flower Show, Garden Club of America; former member of the board of directors, New Jersey State Museum; former director and chairwoman of the Junior Clubs Committee of the National Audubon Society; former president of the Garden Club of Princeton; former member of the Present Day Club of Princeton; first woman elected to Vestry, Trinity Church, Princeton; and board member of St. Martin’s Retreat House, Bernardsville.
In 1958, she joined the board of trustees of Spelman College, Atlanta and chaired the trustee board and development committee. She served on the Advisory Council of Romance Languages and Literature at Princeton University; was honorary president, secretary and treasurer of the Class of 1920 of Princeton University for seven years, writing the class notes column for the Princeton Alumni Weekly from 1989 to 1997.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of McCosh Infirmary, Princeton University, and supporter of The Friends of Princeton University Art Museum, the Princeton Historical Society, the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, the Nassau Club, the Colony Club of New York City, the University Club of New York City, the Adirondack Council, the Metropolitan Opera Association and the New York Philharmonic, the McCarter Theatre and the Bach Choir of Bethlehem.
Daughter of the late Dean and Anna Sage of Bernardsville and New York City, mother of the late John C. Stewart, wife of the late David H. McAlpin, she is survived by son Gustav L. Stewart III of Fitchburg, Mass.; stepson the Rev. David H. McAlpin Jr. of Montgomery; stepdaughter Esther Mead Brownell of Maine; grandchildren John C. Stewart Jr. of Spain and Leslie Stewart Reinig of Germany; five great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren.
A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Church, 33 Mercer St., Princeton. Burial will be in St. Bernards Cemetery.

Kenneth C. Warren
Business executive
Kenneth Charles Warren of Princeton died Friday at The Medical Center at Princeton. He was 52.
He was an executive for SAP America Company, Newtown Square, Pa., and previously had worked for Nabisco in East Hanover and also Hoffmann LaRoche in Nutley.
He was a 1970 graduate of the State University of New York, Maritime College, with a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering and a master’s degree in computer programming.
He was a communicant of St. Mathias Roman Catholic Church in Ridgewood.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in Queens, N.Y., he also lived in Bay Head, Duluth, Ga. and Hixson, Tenn. before moving to Princeton eight years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Diana Lynn (Pyle) Warren; daughter and son-in-law Lisa Genevieve and Rolf Strobel of Manahawkin; daughters Bronwen Elisabeth Dearing of Philadelphia and Marissa Kendylle Warren at home; brother Thomas of Bethlehem, Pa.; sister Irene Warren of Lindenhurst, N.Y.; and grandchildren Emily Anne and Rolf "Eric" Strobel.
The funeral was Monday.

Merlin N. Johnson
Textile industry executive
MONTGOMERY Merlin N. Johnson died Thursday in the Princeton Nursing Home. He was 75.
Born in Jamestown, N.Y., where he lived for 43 years, he and his family moved to the Belle Mead section of Montgomery in 1969.
He worked for Seidman and Seidman CPA firm and served as general manager of National Worsted Mills in the Jamestown area before the mill was closed.
After moving to New Jersey, he commuted to New York for 25 years working as a controller in the textile industries.
He served as a sergeant in the 291st Forward Observation Battalion of the field artillery in the European Theater in World War II, taking part in the Normandy invasion.
He was a member of the National Accounting Association, Rotary Club and the American Legion in the Jamestown area, and the Hillsborough-Montgomery Lions Club, Princeton Elks and Montgomery Senior Citizens.
Son the late Nellie and Merton Johnson and brother of the late Neil Johnson, he is survived by his wife, Anne (Nancy) Johnson; daughter Lynn Crann of Berea, Ohio; son Bruce of Franklin Park; daughter-in-law Wilma Moynihan; sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Robert Watson of Springfield, Va.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Patricia and Clifton Forsberg of Jamestown; and grandchildren Jay and Patrick Crann and Karen and Daniel Johnson.
The funeral is 11 a.m. today at the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 Route 206, Hillsborough, with the Rev. Christine Reed of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton officiating. Cremation will be private.

Worked at medical center
TRENTON Jean D. Leysath Wolfe died Tuesday in Florence, S.C. She was 60.
Born in Trenton, she was a lifelong resident.
She was a nurse technician in The Medical Center at Princeton’s Labor and Delivery Department. She received the Award for Nursing Excellence for outstanding achievement and 35 years of service.
She was first lady of New Hope Church of God in Christ, serving as advisor to church auxiliaries.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Edward Wolfe; daughters and sons-in-law Gloria Jean and Eric Harrigan, and Heather Y. and George Hassell II, all of Trenton; daughters Kim Marie Wolfe and Sara D. Wolfe, both of Trenton; sons Edward C. and Eric Q., both of Trenton; sisters and brother-in-law Hattie Mae Leysath-Russaw and Marillyn Leysath-Driver of Willingboro, Frances Leysath-Cason and Marie Leysath-Young of Trenton, and Idella Leysath-Harley and Gene Harley of North, S.C.; brother George Leysath of Willingboro; brothers and sisters-in-law Harry and Alberta Leysath, and Louis and Louise Leysath; 11 grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Courtney Temple Church of God in Christ, 733 Pennington Ave., Trenton, with Bishop Martin Luther Johnson, state bishop of First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ, officiating.
Burial will be in Ewing Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 9 a.m. until service at the church.

Frances S. Perlmutter
Retired federal employee
Frances S. Perlmutter. 79, of Princeton Township died Friday at The Medical Center at Princeton.
Born in New York, she lived in Tamarac, Fla. 20 years before moving to Princeton.
She was an administrator with the U.S. departments of Energy and Defense and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency many years, retiring five years ago.
She was a Navy WAVES veteran of World War II.
Daughter of the late Samuel and Sophie Smith, wife of the late Bert H. Perlmutter and mother of the late Alice Isenberg, she is survived by daughter Diane Perlmutter of New York; sisters Rita Hatfield of Marlton and Inez Smith of Cherry Hill; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral was Sunday at Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel.

Sister lives in Princeton
YARDLEY, Pa. Pauline Palmer died Friday in Bristol, Pa. She was 88.
Born in Princeton, she was a resident of Bristol and previously lived in Yardley.
Wife of the late Carlton A. Palmer, she is survived by brother and sister-in-law Anthony and Mary Rosso of Lawrence Township; brother Nicholas H. Rosso of Sun City Center, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law Jeanne and Ailery C. Graves of Princeton; sisters-in-law Ruth Rosso of Jersey City and Dorothy Rosso of San Rafael, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40, Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.
Burial will be at Trinity All Saints Cemetery, Princeton.

Son lives in Princeton
HARRISBURG, Pa. Rhoda C. Arons died Saturday at SCCI Hospital in Harrisburg. She was 67.
Born in Philadelphia, she lived in Yardley, Pa., many years before moving to Harrisburg 15 years ago.
She retired as office manager with PCA Corp. after 20 years.
She was a former member of Temple Shalom and B’nai B’rith.
Daughter of the late Samuel and Dorothy Cohen and sister of the late Irwin Cohen, she is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Mitchell Arons of Lawrence Township; Glenn and Pamela Arons of Potomac, Md.; and Perry and Kathy Arons of Princeton; and grandchildren, Zakary, Morgan and Jordan Arons. The funeral and burial were held Sunday.

STUART, Fla. Betsy Ross Bevis died Friday at home. She was 91.
Born in Asheboro, N.C., she lived in Lawrence before moving to Stuart 30 years ago.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Stuart, the board of advisers for Planned Parenthood of the Treasure Coast, the Garden Club, Martin Memorial Ladies Auxiliary and American Association of University Women.
She is survived by daughters Beverly Bevis Jones of Stuart and Cheryl Bevis Crowl of Ridgefield, Conn.; sons J. Ross Bevis of West Windsor and James Norton Bevis of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held this week at First Presbyterian Church of Stuart.

Former Princeton resident
EAST WINDSOR Florence Marcson died Thursday at Meadow Lakes Retirement Community. She was 93.
Born in Montreal, she was a longtime resident of Ontario and Princeton before moving to East Windsor in 1993.
She was a member of the Princeton Art Association, Friends of the Princeton Museum of Art, Present Day Club of Princeton, New Jersey Democratic Organization and Friends of Princeton Open Space.
She graduated from Toronto School of Art and Design.
Wife of the late Simon Marcson, she is survived by son and daughter-in-law Tony and Catherine Marcson of Bowling Green, Ohio; son Michael Marcson of Salisbury, Md.; and grandchildren Nicole, John and Dan Marcson.
The funeral was held Sunday.

EWING Sylvia S. Stark died Saturday at Warminster (Pa.) Hospital. She was 85.
Born in New Britain, Conn., she lived in the Trenton area more than 40 years.
She was a member of Har Sinai Temple, Hadassah and Greenacres Country Club.
Daughter of the late Abraham and Thelia Raschkow and wife of the late Sydney Pestcoe and Sidney Stark, she is survived by daughter Thelia Teaytelbaum of Newark, Del.; stepson and wife Albert and Ellen Stark of Princeton; stepdaughter and husband Joan and Robert Foster of Hamilton; and grandchildren Stacey, Steven and Shoshana Teaytelbaum.
The funeral and burial were held Sunday. The period of mourning is observed at the Stark residence, 860 Lower Ferry Road.
