Steve Timko was officially introduced to the NJSIAA executive committee Wednesday as the new assistant executive director of the organization. He will assume his new duties July 1.
His move to the NJSIAA brings Mr. Timko’s 25-year relationship with Hopewell Valley to a close. For the past 22 years, Mr. Timko has served as the supervisor of health, physical education and athletics for the district.
Last week, he sent a letter of retirement to Superintendent of Schools Robert Sopko.
Mr. Timko stressed that he was perfectly content in Hopewell Valley, but couldn’t pass up his exciting new opportunity.
"It is probably the only position I would leave Hopewell Valley for," Mr. Timko said. "It’s been a great place for me to work over the past 25 years. I’ve enjoyed all of my 25 years in Hopewell Valley."
Mr. Timko added that his experience in Hopewell Valley has greatly prepared him for his new venture. As supervisor of health, physical education and athletics, he dealt with sports in Hopewell Valley at all levels — kindergarten through 12th grade.
Now his responsibilities with the NJSIAA will include state tournament planning, corporate sponsorship assistance and group classification.
"My job here in Hopewell Valley has done a great job preparing me for the next challenge," he said. "My feet haven’t hit the ground yet."
But while Mr. Timko is looking ahead, he couldn’t help but look back fondly on his 25 years in Hopewell Valley.
He’s proud of the number of programs that have been added to the athletic programs, as well as how competitive they’ve been. He’s also proud of the county sportsmanship awards bestowed on Hopewell Valley Central High School the past three years.
But most of all, it is the people he will miss the most.
"The coaches, the student athletes, the community — all the people here have been great to me," he said.
