Thirty-one high school teams from around the state competed in this year’s Envirothon competition, held in Pine Hill. Two of those teams were from Hopewell Valley Central High School.
The team group was honored by the Hopewell Township Committee June 8.
The local students did themselves proud, with one CHS team taking second place and the other coming in just a few points behind it, taking third.
"We’re proud to recognize what they’ve accomplished," Hopewell Township Mayor Marylou Ferrara said during the Township Committee meeting, when the Envirothon team was honored with commemorative certificates from local government.
At the all-day Envirothon competition, high school teams were given fast-paced written and practical tests in forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife and non-point-source pollution.
All but two members of this year’s CHS Envirothon contingent are expected to attend the event next year, said Central High School social studies teacher Jeff Newmann. Mr. Newmann coached this year’s team with township resident Ray Nichols, who works for the state Department of Environmental Protection and is a member of the township environmental commission.
