We were pleased to hear there are new proposals being considered for the Bordentown Regional School District’s drug policy.

Students caught under the influence of drugs could have their lockers searched in addition to having their names given to the police.
Some Board of Education members said they needed a little more time to look at the proposals and discuss them. While we believe that further study is a good idea, we still lean toward eventually adopting the proposals.
As Bordentown Township Police Chief Danny Kiernan said, giving police the names of students caught under the influence of drugs could be a way to help police find the possible source of narcotics in the school.
Kids who want to get high and endanger their health are going to do so whether teachers and parents want them to or not. Let’s at least make it harder for them to do so in school, disrupting the education and lives of non-drug-taking students.
We understand that searched lockers could be seen as a loss of personal freedom. But students should realize early in their lives that they can forfeit their freedoms if they break the rules.
