On Friday during graduation ceremonies for the CHS Class of 2001, Byron Pappas, valedictorian, shared the following thoughts with classmates, parents, friends, faculty, Principal John Bach, Superintendent Robert Sopko and members of the Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education

It’s wonderful to see everyone here tonight and it is a tremendous honor to be able to make this speech. As I prepared to write this speech, there were many thoughts and ideas that came to mind, but I found it too difficult to put many of them into words.
One thing that was very clear to me was that this day is one of triumph and happiness, a celebration of our successes over the past four years. Every one of us has worked so hard over the years and today we are able to celebrate our graduation from this fine high school.
At the same time, we should think of today as a turning point in our lives. Today is the day when we leave behind the comfort and shelter of our school, community, and friends. But I am personally confident in the ability of each and every one of us to go out there and face the world. It has been our successes, as well as our failures, at this young stage of our lives that have better prepared us to face what lies in the future, that which remains unknown. And while it may be easier to be fearful of the unknown, I believe that every one of us can adapt to the changes that will soon arrive and become successful individuals.
As I prepared this speech, I reflected upon the events of the past four years. Our families have guided us with their values and wisdom: work hard to achieve success, treat others as you would like to be treated, and enjoy each day of your life are just a few examples. It is also apparent to me the extent of which we have evolved, both as individuals and as a class. The support we have received from the teachers and staff of our school was invaluable. Whether we think about it or not, they were always there for us. They not only played an integral role in our education, but in our development into the fine young men and women that we are today. So I now extend many thanks to our families and educators, who are largely responsible for who we are.
I would now personally like to thank each and every member of this graduating class. It truly was a pleasure to know every one of you and to grow up with you. The past four years were not an easy task, but it certainly was helpful to be surrounded by such a refined and remarkable group of people. Today, I see in our class a group of people who would not only do anything to help a friend in need, but who would do so without first thinking of their own needs. That makes us truly extraordinary people. My own academic success would not have been possible had I not been challenged each day by such intelligent and talented individuals.
Our futures now lie ahead of us. We will each go down our separate paths and make a life for ourselves. Our fate and destiny will be decided by our actions alone. And although we now move on with our lives, our actions will forever be reflective of this fine school and community. In closing, I would like to thank everyone for being here to share in the glorious end of our high school years. I would also like to wish everyone in the Class of 2001 the very best in all of your future endeavors. Thank you again.
