JAMESBURG — Because of a possible increase in the number of new kindergarten students, the Board of Education is considering building new classrooms in either the John F. Kennedy or the Grace M. Breckwedel school.
Superintendent of Schools Richard Ballard said the district may need up to six new classrooms in the coming years to accommodate possible large numbers of enrolled students in the kindergarten program.
However, where the new classrooms will be placed is up for debate. It is uncertain in which school the rooms will be needed, and if they will be module, separate from the school, or attached, said School Business Administrator Thomas Reynolds.
The board held a preliminary discussion on the possible expansion June 14.
"We need to get the ball rolling on this. Right now we’re providing services to the students, but not in a setting like this, how it should be," said Mr. Ballard, speaking of the JFK school library in which the board held its meeting.
An example of the district’s limited space are the English as a Second Language classes, currently taught in the library’s kitchenette.
These classes are usually one-on-one or two-on-one sessions, said school board member Sherry Theinert.
The Board of Education expects the additions to happen sometime in the next few years.
