Elizabeth O’Connell-Thompson, a fifth-grade student at Holy Cross School, Rumson, was named the second-place winner of the ninth annual Monmouth County Historical Commission Essay Contest.
Contest guidelines required fifth-graders to write about a person in Monmouth County who has made a difference in the 20th century. O’Connell-Thompson’s essay was based on William "Count" Basie, the Red Bank-born musician and swing-era bandleader.
The award presentation took place at a meeting of the Monmouth County Historical Commission, where the student received a plaque and a $75 savings bond from Freeholder Theodore J. Narozanick and Robert Schoeffling, commissioner of the Historical Commission.
