MANALAPAN — The driver of a 1997 Mack dump truck had to be extricated from his vehicle after it experienced mechanical failure and swerved off the road near the intersection of Gordons Corner Road and Old Queens Boulevard at 9:04 a.m. July 31.
According to Manalapan Police Capt. Michael Rumola, the dump truck, driven by Glen Davis Swan, 37, of Manalapan, was traveling northeast on Gordons Corner Road. When the truck reached the vicinity of Old Queens Boulevard it began to experience mechanical problems. The driver indicated that the vehicle lost power and veered off the road into a wooded area.
Swan was trapped in the vehicle and the truck’s fuel tank ruptured, causing diesel fuel to spill onto the ground.
Members of the Gordons Corner Fire Co. and the Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid Squad were called to the scene to extricate the driver from the vehicle. Swan was transported to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was brought to the emergency room at 9:30 a.m., examined, treated and released, according to a hospital spokesman.
The Monmouth County Hazardous Material team was called to the scene to coordinate the removal and cleanup of the diesel fuel, police said. The incident forced the closing of Gordons Corner Road between Conmack Lane and Old Queens Boulevard for most of the day so the hazardous material could be properly removed.
Patrolman Peter Chalfin is investigating the accident.
