The Colts Neck Racquet Club’s women’s tennis team will be competing at the Eastern Sectional Championships in the USA League in Syracuse, N.Y. The winner of this tournament will go on to represent the Eastern Region at the National Championships in Tucson, Ariz. from Oct 11-14. The Colts Neck team is comprised of 13 players with a 3.0 National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) rating. The ratings are Beginner (NTRP 1.0-2.5), Intermediate (3.0-4.0) and Advanced (4.5 and above).
Colts Neck played its way to the Eastern Regional by winning the Southern Regional Championship over Mid-Hudson and Westchester, N.Y. The women got to the Southern Regional by winning their local (5-0 record) and area (defeating Bergen and Union counties) titles. Ellen Morgenstern is the captain of the Colts Neck Team. Team members are Cheryl Paulie, Cindy Furmato, Laura Dellaccio, Mary Anne Liotta, Susan Seide, Cheryl Gardina, Bonnie Franzblau, Beth Berke, Karen Manager, Barbara O’Connor, Teri Kolakowski and Elissa Robles. The Eastern Regionals will be held at Syracuse University Friday through Sunday.
Marlboro’s Kevin Silvestri, finished eighth at the Rutgers Junior Open, held at the par-71 Rutgers University Golf Course, Piscataway. Silvestri had rounds of 75-77-76-76 for a 72-hole score of 304. The winner of the ages 15-16 tournament was David Marino from Cumberland, Rhode Island, who had a 72-hole score of 285 on rounds of 70-71-70-74. Silvestri led the Marlboro Mustangs to the school’s first-ever state sectional title, Central/South Jersey Group IV, as well as the Freehold Regional District crown in the spring.
In the Boys Division (ages 12-14), Colts Neck’s David Cohen had an eighth-place finish in the 54-hole tournament. He had rounds of 78-89-79 for a 246. Somerville’s Kevin Foley was first using a 73 on the third day for a 229. He opened with rounds of 79 and 77. Cohen was a member of the Colts Neck High School golf team that won three titles, including the Group I state championship in the spring. The Cougars’ other titles were Central/South Jersey Group I and Shore Conference A Central Division.
