UPPER FREEHOLD — The 27-acre Byron Johnson Recreation Area behind Allentown High School is set to receive irrigation construction.
Last week, the Township Committee awarded by resolution the $174,628 Phase I irrigation contract to Tiger Construction Service Corp. of Farmingdale.
"The drainage is done and we’re ready to seed," said Committeeman Bill Miscoski. "But we need irrigation first."
The irrigation system is the next step in the development of what Mr. Miscoski called a state-of-the-art recreation area. Township officials have envisioned the Byron Johnson Recreation Area will have three baseball fields, two soccer fields, one football field, bocce courts, horseshoe pits, four tennis courts and a basketball court.
Mr. Miscoski said he hopes the irrigation will begin by next spring, but said the fields themselves will not be ready until the following autumn.
