MILLSTONE Just do it.
The tag line of the well-known sneaker company ads could apply to Lipica Shaw as she races through the woods as a cross country runner. But it’s just as apt to relate to her work on stage.
The 14-year-old Clarksburg resident will be among the locals performing at Sunday’s Millstone Day celebration at Frogbridge Day Camp on Yellow Meeting House Road. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. and features a variety of activities.
"I get nervous before I perform, but once I’m on stage, I just sing," said Lipica, who will sing the national anthem during the opening ceremonies and will perform two 15-minute sets during the event.
"What’s the worst that can happen? They don’t like you," she added. "Big deal."
Lipica will not be the only local performer Sunday.
The schedule also calls for performances by Stillshot, a band made up of area teen-agers; the Community School band; dance routines by Kids Workshop; martial arts demonstrations by Karate for Kids; magic shows and a clown. Girl Scout Troop 47 and Boy Scout Troop 116 also will be involved in the festivities, according to event organizer Phyllis Guiliano.
Organizations including the Millstone Elks, the Horsemen’s Association of Millstone Township, the fire and first aid squads, and the State Police will participate in the event, which has been held annually for more than 25 years. A model of the proposed Veterans Memorial in the township will be on display, Ms. Guiliano added.
Activities available include mini golf, paddle boats, fishing, basketball, volleyball, bocce ball, and swimming. There will be games, and plenty of food, Ms. Guiliano said.
Lipica won’t be attending the event solely as a performer. She and fellow Millstone resident Amie MacNath are members of the Youth Speakers Bureau, which will be working with the Millstone Drug Alliance to hand out brochures and pamphlets at the event. Lipica said the YSB works to educate teens about the dangers of tobacco use.
As for her on-stage performance, Lipica said she will sing "everything "from Disney to Celine Dion." As of last week, she still was uncertain of what songs she would include in her show.
"It’s going to be a variety," said Lipica, who also sings with various chorales at the Westminster Choir College and has been a Girl Scout for numerous years.
"I just like to do it," she added about singing. "It’s fun. It builds confidence, getting up on stage. You just let everything go, and do it."
Lipica, who has been singing for about seven years, said Celine Dion was her favorite singer, but that she had no intentions of making a career of music. The Allentown High School freshman is looking to go into sports medicine or law.
"But I’d like to continue singing as a hobby," she said.
