Great blue heron is not a crane, resident points out

The long-legged bird on page 17 (Sentinel, Aug. 30) is Ardea herodias, the great blue heron, and not a "crane" as misidentified in the caption.

The great blue heron is common and easily seen around bodies of water throughout New Jersey, as well as most of North America.

The crane family, Gruidae, is represented in North America by the endangered whooping crane and the more numerous sandhill crane, the latter of which has been found wintering in New Jersey in recent years, although not at Davidson’s Mill Pond.
