Girls tennis nets victory in opener

Allentown notches win over Trenton.

Dan Fallon was eager to see how good his Allentown High School girls’ tennis team would be this season. Following the first two matches of the season, he’s still waiting for the results.
About the only thing Allentown’s matchup against Trenton and West Windsor South had in common was they both lasted only four matches. In the season opener last Thursday, Allentown defeated Trenton, 4-0. Four days later, Allentown was defeated by West Windsor South, 4-0.
"It shows how the division is just so bizarre," Fallon noted. "I don’t know what kind of a team we have yet. This past week you got the two extremes. By the middle of next week, we’ll have a better idea."
Against Trenton, Brianna Feola defeated Courtney Ritchie, 6-4, 6-4. Jen Harrison defeated Rene Wilson, 6-0, 6-0, at second singles. At third singles, Jessica Horner defeated Channel Kennedy, 6-0, 6-2.
Kim Canzanella and Steph Weber continued the run for Allentown with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Merlina Rodriquez and Theresa Grant at first doubles. Due to the lack of players by Trenton, there was no second doubles match held.
"We played very well," Fallon said. "Everyone had a good time. It was a great way to start the season.
"(Monday) we played West Windsor South and they are unbelievable. They beat Princeton last year and I don’t think they will have a problem with them this year. We have played them two year in a row and they are extremely tough. From our experience, they are the ones to beat (in the conference)."
Heavy rain started to fall during the second doubles match. By then, the three singles matches and first doubles all went heavily in West Windsor South’s favor.
"You have the teams like West Windsor South and Princeton that practice and play all the time," Fallon said. "Then you have the ones like Trenton and Allentown who do not. That doesn’t mean we can’t catch up to them. It’ll just take a little time."
Allentown is neither at the top or the bottom of the CVC. It is somewhere in the middle. Exactly where will not be known until the more competitive matches are played out this week and the rest of the season.
