Rain results in NBC tennis 3-0 setback

Moorestown wins three matches against Northern

The rain came pouring down late Monday afternoon, putting an end to every sporting event in its wake.
Still, mighty Moorestown had enough time to win three matches against a fine Northern Burlington County Regional High School girls’ tennis team.
And yet the Greyhounds’ Caitlin Crawbuck (first singles) and Devin Crawbuck (second singles) were still surviving — each down a set, but neither out of her respective match.
Moorestown’s Candace Carlin had beaten Caitlin Crawbuck 6-1 in the first set, but Crawbuck had won the all-important opening game of the second set when the rains came and stopped action for good.
Amy Huah took the first set from Devin Crawbuck 6-2, but Crawbuck was beginning to show signs of life and even aced Huah. "She (Huah) didn’t beat me," said Crawbuck, who felt she was still very much in the match.
Third singles was a little more one-sided with Kristen Klepacki defeating NBC’s Heather Hatala 6-1, 6-0.
"Heather (Hatala) was stay right with her (Klepacki) but she was no match for her," said NBC head coach Carla Crawbuck.
Using some nasty backspin on their returns, Liz Formoso and Emma Smith captured all but one game versus NBC’s Alex Ayres and Jackie Mellilo in first doubles.
Nonetheless, Mellilo, only a sophomore, looked good for long stretches and Ayres also played well.
"Mellilo, she really tried hard to return serves," added Coach Crawbuck.
In second doubles, however, Liz Cooper and Stephanie Lykos shut out Northern’s Jessica Tournquist and Jaimee Simmons in straight sets.
In a way, NBC was relieved to get one of the Moorestown matches out of the way.
"They’re not going to lose to anybody," Crawbuck said of Moorestown.
Northern Burlington was s scheduled to have hosted Palmyra on Wednesday.
On Friday and Saturday, the Greyhounds have been invited to participate in the Moorestown Classic, where they’re scheduled to face powerhouses Shawnee and Moorestown. Then on Monday, NBC is scheduled at Holy Cross.
