Dear Parents;
Your child’s teacher might be considering integrating the local newspaper into the classroom as a tool to enhance instruction this year.
You can help make this possible for your childs’ class.
Packet Publications’ Newspapers in Education (NiE) program, which has been offered to the Princeton school district for two years, is an initiative to provide each student with a local newspaper. The newspapers are used in a manner, by your child’s teacher, which enhances state and national mandated educational standards, via curriculum supplied, which fit current educational requirements. The program also hopes to instill a long-term interest in reading in students.
The National Research Council finds that consistent access to reading materials can increase a child’s motivation to read and keep pace academically with their peers. Providing a newspaper that students will not only use in class, but have the opportunity to read independently, is a way for Packet Publications to play a role in stimulating academic activity in the community.
Currently there are close to 3,000 students involved in Packet Publications’ Newspapers in Education program. Packet Publications’ NiE hosted over 25 writing and academic challenges during the 2000-2001 school year, and provided a two-month journalism camp for high school students during the summer of 2001.
For the 2001-2002 school year, NiE, has acquired and developed even more educational materials for teachers to use in their instruction. The program will also provide even more academic challenges this year. We have networked with a number of local organizations and businesses and this year students will have the opportunity to have professionals come to their classrooms and discuss various career fields, attend educational field trips, and some students will even be invited to job shadow professionals.
This program is offered to the schools free of charge, however, we actively pursue financial support from outside sources. In order to insure the longevity of this program, we would like for you, as the parent of a child who could be benefiting from the program, to consider the option of contributing to this program by paying $10.00, which is only a fraction of the programming cost.
If you are interested in having your child receive the newspaper in class, used by the teacher as a learning resource, please direct the teacher to www.princetonpacket.com Newspapers in Education NiE Just for Teachers.
Please give this request your careful consideration.
Thank you,
