Manville will play host to one of the New Jersey gubernatorial debates this fall.
Manville’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2290 will be the site of a debate on Oct. 19, VFW District 15 Commander Andy Henkel said Thursday.
According to Mr. Henkel, Republican candidate Bret Shundler and Democrat James McGreevey will face off in the center of the Post’s hall, surrounded by local residents and reporters. Mr. Henkel said the debate will give local residents a chance to see the two main candidates for the state’s highest office address issues that are important to the community.
According to Mr. Henkel the event will be open to the public and the VFW hall can accommodate up to 500 spectators.
Manville’s VFW hall is no stranger to high-level political events, as it was the site of last year’s Somerset County Republican Convention where then-candidate and current President George W. Bush gave a speech and accepted the county GOP’s endorsement.
The hall also has been the site of congressional hearings and state political conventions.
