To the editor:
I wish to thank the residents of Hightstown for their support of the Hightstown First Aid Squad, support which enabled the squad to send one of our ambulances to the staging area at Giants Stadium on Tuesday, a deployment arranged by the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management. We were able to send a crew of four squad members (leaving a crew behind to cover this area) along with four EMT firefighters from Washington Township, who "hitched" a ride with us.
You should know that our ambulance was re-deployed to the ferry terminal at Weehawken, then when released from that location we returned to Giants Stadium from where we were released at about 10:30 p.m. Unfortunately, there were very few treatable casualties, although we, as did members of the East Windsor volunteer squads and members from hundreds of volunteer squads from all over this state as well as some from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, stood ready to serve if needed.
We have been able to field crews and send them north twice since last Tuesday’s tragedy and will continue to do so if we are able.
Our president has said that we should ready ourselves for "as long as it takes." Please consider offering your assistance in this effort through local camps such as ours. We strongly invite any who would like to consider joining our ranks to think seriously about joining. Your financial support is always welcome, but we, as well as the Hightstown Fire Co., are always looking for people to volunteer their time and talents to further our goals of supplying emergency services to the people of Hightstown and the larger community beyond our borders. You need not be a riding member to join, as we have a need for people with administrative skills as well, and in particular people with Spanish language skills.
Just as you determine you own level of financial support, so too you can judge your donation of your time according to your own ability. Some of our members are single, some are married; some have children, some don’t. Each member is treated as an individual, and every amount of support is appreciated.
