Falcons finally play tennis

Tennis Coach Trudy Marmorek will be looking for progress and hopefully a win this week after her Monroe Township High School girls team lost a close match in a delayed start to the season last week.
Singles players Kaitlyn Schobert, a junior, and senior Meredith Blumenstock picked up the Falcons’ points in a 3-2 loss to South Plainfield Sept. 13.
Monroe was scheduled to play Colonia yesterday (Thursday), at Bishop Ahr today (Friday) at North Brunswick Monday and South Brunswick home Tuesday.
The Falcon girls will be hoping to get in a series of matches after having had four postponed by rain and the World Trade Center disaster.
"We were competitive against South Plainfield. Kaitlyn and Meredith’s matches were hard-fought. Each played for two and half hours, including tie breakers," Marmorek said.
She said her young doubles teams gave good efforts.
"There’s room for improvement, but we were competitive. We weren’t blown away," the coach said.
The Monroe team posted wins at first and second singles, but South Plainfield recovered with a win at third singles and wins in both doubles matches.
Schobert, in first singles, defeated South Plainfield’s Eva Rodriguez, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6, while, in the second singles match, Blumenstock won a match with the Tigers’ Tamika Limerick, 7-6 with a tie-breaker score of 7-3, and 7-6 with an 8-6 tie-breaker.
Marissa Judd of South Plainfield won, 6-l, 6-1, in the third singles match with sophomore Lorin Mordecai.
In doubles, South Plainfield wins were scored by Elayne Russell and Melissa Scotto, 6-1, 6-4, over junior Kim Gobac and Ashley Widmer, a sophomore, and by Keli Lee and Yamura Salazar, 6-1, 6-4, over freshman Robin Romm and Surina Patel, a sophomore.
