Princeton Regional Schools students have responded to the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon by launching fund drives for the relief effort.
Several students ran lemonade stands Tuesday afternoon. The children had the day off for Rosh Hashana.
Will Moseley, 11, of Princeton Township said his sister came up with the idea, but decided to let her brother and his friends work the stand, which was set up on Jefferson Road. Will took some time off from the lemonade stand to get a haircut, but friends Nicky Stark, 11, Stan Deruiter, 11, and Mario Simonelli, 11, kept the operation going.
"Every little bit helps," Nicky said. "It’s better than sitting at home doing nothing."
The stand sold chocolate chip cookies for 25 cents and cups of lemonade for 50 cents. Many patrons paid more than the posted price with one customer giving $5, Will said. An hour-and-a-half’s worth of sales netted $23.
While the stand pulled in a few customers, the boys planned to move up to Wiggins Street, which has more pedestrian traffic.
Nick’s younger sister, Madeline, 10, decided to set up her own stand on a child-size wooden picnic table in her driveway off Henry Avenue.
She made a few dollars and was waiting for some friends from school to help out and keep her company.
Saddened by the attack on the World Trade Center, Jeannette Richards of Princeton Township wanted to help.
So the sophomore at Princeton High School gathered 40 of her friends to collect money for the Red Cross at the communitywide service held Sunday at Palmer Square.
"I organized it with the help of my family and friends at school," she said Monday.
Walking around with donation cans, the students collected $3,448, she said.
And Jeannette wasn’t the only one in the family to help. Her 9-year-old brother, Tyler, pitched in by baking brownies and cookies to sell at the service, Jeannette said. The bake sale pulled in $600, bringing the total amount to over $4,000, she said.
The funds will go to the Red Cross.
The following Princeton High School students participated: Lauren Murphy, Margie Szabo, Meredith Zeitzer, Carolina Danspeckgruber, Hilary Strasburger, Lara Klainerman, Katie O’Flarrety, Corey Rosenthal, Lauren Vildostegui, Leila Taha, Becky Rauch, Dana Gutterman, Emily Mahar, Andrew Mahar, Tamar Zeilberger, Alex Winogora, Alan Hughes, Sam Moni, Rachel Mattes, Lena Leson, Katy Glickman, Flora Deruyter, Kia Anderson, Michael Dahl, Shannon Dahl, Louise Finell, Alex Kater-Narvell, Stephanie Neilson and Jessie Meadow.
And six students each raised more than $200 Jeannette Richards, Nick Koenig, Quillan Rosen, Alex Ripp, Katie Stannard and Jarrod Simpson.
