On Sept. 20 I set out to document the destruction at the World Trade Center that I had only seen through the eyes of other photographers.
After several hours of walking downtown and trying unsuccessfully to get to the site, I was lucky enough to be escorted by two Port Authority police officers who allowed me the once in a lifetime opportunity to walk the area that once housed the twin towers – the area that has been renamed ground zero.
In that hour or so I spent walking ground zero, I learned two lessons. Lesson one: Good journalists do cry. Lesson two: Tell your loved ones how much you care. I did. The words "I love you" can never be heard too often.
