To the editor
In the absence of any official municipal acknowledgement of their efforts, I want to express my admiration and appreciation for the people and organizations in Hillsborough who have responded with their time, effort, money and prayers to assist in the rescue effort in New York.
The day after the tragedy, I was glad to be a part of the memorial service sponsored by the Hillsborough-Montgomery Clergy Association at Faith Lutheran Church, which was packed with local people of all denominations praying for the victims and the rescuers.
As the days went by, I admired the dedication of Hillsborough’s volunteer firemen, who gave their time and sweat to work side-by-side with the other heroes in the horrors of Ground Zero, and who also have tirelessly collected donations to help them. The Hillsborough Rescue Squad also took their turn in the smoking ruins, the chance of finding any survivors was slim, but they went anyway.
I’ve also been proud of the people of our township. They’ve flown their flags, generously given their donations to the rescuers and the victims’ families, prayed in their place of worship, and kept their spirits high. I particularly marveled at the efforts of people like the owners of Catered Affair, who took time and resources out from their business to organize the generosity of our citizens, and collect and send truckloads of supplies to the rescuers.
Though I am happy to write to commend the response of the people of Hillsborough to this tragedy. I believe that it is the responsibility of their elected officials to lead the praise. I call upon the Township Committee to show some moral leadership, to proudly fly the American flag on our main streets, and to acknowledge our firemen and all others who rose to the challenge of Sept. 11.
