Cardinals hope to improve despite numbers

Cross CountryThe Lawrence High School girls cross country team faces a unique challenge this season.

The girls team consists entirely of seniors Nicole Sahrenfeld, Jen Lis and Carolyn Pearson, as well as junior Marian Kochman, sophomore Katharina Zeschky and freshman Brianna Probasco.
With just six members on the squad, the Cardinals can’t be quite as concerned about wins and losses as they were in the past, according to girls coach Gary Dura.
"The turnout we expected just didn’t materialize," Dura said. "Our numbers are certainly lean so the training and outlook has to be reduced. We can’t afford to lose anyone to injuries."
The transition year has not been kind to the Cardinal girls thus far. They are 0-4 on the season, but Dura does has some hope as he looks ahead in the schedule.
"There will be some opportunities for victory during the last few weeks of the Colonial Valley Conference schedule," Dura said. "Aside from that, we’re looking for some personal best times at the county and sectional meets.
"We want to see how much we can improve."
