To the editor
I wrote a poem this morning for the people we all lost. Some friends said I should send it to you.
We heard another touching story today
About the families of the World Trade Center attack.
After we finished talking I noticed I drank
Another glass of water as again I was taken aback.
As I looked down
I saw my tears on the floor
And I looked where my wife was standing
And I saw even more.
I know you probably did not notice
But on the news today
A group of mourners placing flowers
Left tears the same way.
I thought the pool of water
Next to the exhausted fireman’s gear
Was from a mighty fire hose,
But there was no fire hose near.
The police and rescue workers
Had to be careful not to slip
Because the tears of every one of them
Created ponds with every drip.
Look carefully
The next time you explore,
For there are ponds at the Pentagon
That were never there before.
There are ponds of tears in every state,
From every walk of life.
There are ponds of tears in every country,
Mourning those who lost their life.
I drank more water today
To try to replace the tears,
Then I think of all the grieving families
Who will be drinking more water for years.
Our strong country will recover
To be greater than before,
And those ponds of tears are everywhere,
And God will give us the strength to endure.
