Service will honor missing Howell resident

HOWELL — A memorial mass will be held on Sept. 29 for township resident John "Jay" Lennon Jr.

Lennon is a rescue worker who is listed as missing at the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, New York City.

He is a Port Authority police officer who served as a court liaison and with the emergency service and rescue.

Lennon, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., resided in Howell with his wife, Patricia, and their children, daughters Melissa and Katie, and sons Christopher and John Jr.

His father, John Lennon Sr., is a Howell municipal employee. In a press release, he thanked everyone who has helped to sustain the family through their ordeal with calls, visits and prayers.

The memorial mass will start at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Veronica’s Church, Route 9 north.

The following day, at 7 p.m. Sept. 30, there will be prayer vigil held on the sleigh riding hill in the municipal complex, Preventorium Road.

According to Helene Schlegel, director of the parks and recreation department, the vigil is being held so Howell can "stand as one in honor of all the victims, rescue workers and volunteers and their families."
