Township should wave the flag

EDITORIAL: Why not honor vets with park names and flags on holidays?

Hillsborough’s long-standing policy of not honoring veterans or placing flags on Route 206 needs to be re-evaluated, especially in light of the current circumstances.
While most communities dress up their main thoroughfares for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Veterans Day, Hillsborough has kept observances limited to the municipal building and grounds.
Somewhere along the way, it was decided the township shouldn’t put up flags or decorations on Route 206 for these holidays as it does for Christmas.
So when the inventory of flags was checked for placement following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, only a few were found.
For years, resident Art Zander has approached Township Committee after Township Committee for recognition of the contributions of Hillsborough vets in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and time and time again he has been rebuffed.
Whether for flags to be posted on holidays or having a park named after a local vet, acknowledgment of local veterans has been ignored.
We don’t know why so little has been done in this regard, but we hope to see the Township Committee take quick action to honor our local veterans’ contributions.
