Princeton firefighters collect for comrades

The Princeton Fire Department came boots in hand Saturday afternoon and collected $11,000 for the families of firefighters, police officers and emergency rescue workers who died in the World Trade Center attack.
Members of the Princeton Fire Department — comprising Princeton Hook and Ladder, Mercer Engine Co. No. 3 and Princeton Engine No. 1 companies — stood along Nassau Street from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., said Chief Henry Tamasi.
The chief said he was very appreciative of donors’ generosity. Some people gave hundred-dollar bills and one man wrote out a check for $300, Chief Tamasi said.
"It was amazing. People were still putting money in the boots as we were packing up for the day," he said.
All the funds will go to the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund, which benefits the families of the fallen firefighters and emergency medical workers at the World Trade Center, he said.
The donations are tax-deductible, he said.
Since the fund-raiser was so successful, the department is considering holding a second one in the coming weeks, Chief Tamasi said.
The fund was established by the International Association of Fire Fighters. For more information or to make a donation, visit the association’s Web site at www.iaff.org.
