Allentown Garden Club to create winter wreaths
The October meeting of the Allentown Garden Club will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Allentown Methodist Church, Church Street.
Members will create wreaths out of amaranth that can be hung indoors or placed outside for the birds. Preregistration is not required, and the public is invited to attend. Participants should bring $10-$12 cash for materials, a pruner or scissors, and an interchangeable-tip screwdriver. Extra screwdrivers will be on hand for participants who don’t have their own.
The club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Allentown Methodist Church. Beginners and experts alike from all surrounding areas are welcome to join the club. At the Nov. 8 meeting, participants will create their own hanging "kissing ball," as seen in the Kinsman catalog, for home decorating for the holiday season.
Public invited to society
tea party on Oct. 13
The Allentown-Upper Freehold Historical Society will hold its "Tea for 2 or 4 or More" as part of the Allentown Harvest Festival activities on Oct. 13, from noon to 4 p.m. The setting is lakeside at 41 S. Main St., Allentown, and tables will be set with vintage linen and china.
Admission is $7.50 for adults and $3.75 for children under age 12, and the menu consists of finger sandwiches, cookies, tea breads, sweets, tea and coffee, which is all made and served by the members. The event is the society’s annual fund-raiser, with the proceeds used for historical research and local history programs presented to the public.
AHS to host workshop on college admissions
Allentown High School will host a "College Admissions Workshop" from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the school’s auditorium, High Street. Ken Hitchner, a retired guidance counselor from East Brunswick High School, will be the guest speaker. Hitchner is an educational consultant and the author of books on the college admission process. The workshop is designed for the parents of college-bound students, whether the student is a senior or a freshman. Students are also welcome to attend. Library restoration plans to be discussed Oct. 10
The Allentown Public Library Association will hold a special meeting of its board of trustees at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the library, 16 S. Main St. Historical architect Michael Calafati will discuss the upcoming restoration project. The public is welcome to come and see the construction plans and hear about the changes taking place at the library.

Storyteller coming
to Allentown Library
Storyteller Rebecca Kelly will return to the Allentown Public Library at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 to present stories for children ages 8-12. The event is sponsored by First Washington Bank.
