The undefeated Allentown United U11 travel soccer team extended its unbeaten string to 15 straight games this past Saturday. It faced the previously unbeaten Pinelands Junior Wildcats in a tough road game. The game was played on a cold, windy field and both teams started cautiously, concentrating on defense. Allentown broke out and scored the first goal on a shot by Matt Frein midway through the first half. Allentown had the edge in the first half but could not add to its lead. Pinelands came out very aggressive in the second half and used its size and strength to tie the game when Allentown was unable to clear the ball from in front of its net. The Wildcats were re-energized and poured on the pressure. Allentown’s team played their hearts out and turned away every Wildcats’ rush, with goaltender Alex Fortsch making one tough save after another. It became difficult to clear the ball in the face of a very stiff wind. Allentown had several breakouts but was unable to capitalize on any of them. The game was decided when a Wildcats defender took down Dylan Vaughan in the Wildcats penalty area and Danny Santos scored the game-winner on the ensuing penalty kick. Allentown held on to win an exciting 2-1 decision. Allentown’s next match is this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against LMSA at Patriots Park.
The Allentown United U14 (co-ed) soccer team improved its record to 2-1 with a tough 2-1 victory over the TRY Outlaws of Tom’s River. The offense was spearheaded by two goals from center forward Brian Pereira and great outside play by wingers Matt O’Hare and Tian Shackleford. The midfield was controlled by United for most of the afternoon, with terrific efforts from Thomas Barkley and Greg Koday. The usually strong defense was solid for the third week in a row, anchored by outstanding performances by stopper Zach Strobino and sweeper Kevin Pope. United resumes play this coming Saturday against the Berkeley Invaders at 10:30 a.m. at the Eastern Boulevard Soccer Complex in Berkeley.
The Jersey Storm U12 (can’t turn 13 before Aug. 1) select travel baseball team is looking for a top pitcher.
