On Nov. 17, the Thomas J. Kavanaugh, VFW Post 2290, will celebrate the 70th anniversary of its institution by holding a dinner/dance at the post from 6 p.m. to midnight.
Post 2290 was received its charter on Nov. 25, 1931. The post was named after Thomas J. Kavanaugh who was a corporal in Company L, 310 Infantry, 7th Division. He was born on March 25, 1895 in Weehawken and moved to Manville in 1912. Thomas J. Kavanaugh was inducted in the army on Feb. 25, 1918, and was killed in action on Oct. 16, 1918, at St Juvin, France. He was buried at the Argonne Cemetery in Meuse, France.
The objective of VFW post 2290 is to assist our veterans who may be ill or need help in other ways. The post also assists the widows and orphans of veterans who have passed away.
Together with its ladies auxiliary, the post is also involved in community activities, youth education and works hand-in-hand with other organizations. Over the years post 2290 has been able to donate untold thousands of dollars to rescue squads, fire departments, has a scholarship program, supports school and church functions. The post also supports other worthwhile charities, not only in Manville but in our surrounding communities as well.
The post has been the site of a congressional budget hearing, one of five held throughout the country outside of Washington, D.C., and also hosted then-candidate George W. Bush last year when he visited the Somerset County caucus.
Membership is the primary source that allows post 2290 to continue its work. To become a member of the Veterans of Wars one must have served in country during a wartime situation.
The festivities will include a dinner of either chicken cordon bleu, broiled flounder or prime rib and music for your dancing pleasure. The cost for this evening is $35 per person. The post is located at 600 Washington Ave., Manville.
