Otto Rabe, 99, died Thursday, Sept. 2, at his home in Monroe.
He was born in Heiningen, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in the 1920s, settling in Monroe nearly 60 years ago.
He retired more than 30 years ago from Synchro Machine Co., Perth Amboy, where he was a longtime machinist.
He was very active in the Monroe Township community. He was a charter member and past chief of Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1. In addition, he also served for many years as a special police officer, animal-control officer and school crossing guard. He was also a member and past chief of the Middlesex County Fire Police.
His wife Charlotte died in 1990. His two brothers, Albin and Richard, and a sister, Anna Rabe also have passed away.
Surviving are three sisters, Erna Weiterer, Aline Voss and Elisabeth Bredemeir, all of Germany; a daughter, Ruth Buttcher of Monroe; six grandchildren, Craig Buttcher of Millstone, Ruth Ann Fuchsloch, Velma Witkowski, Michael Buttcher and Joann Varga, all of Monroe, and Patricia Quinlan of Old Bridge; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, Sept. 29, at Eckman Funeral Home in Spotswood, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Spotswood. Entombment followed at Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Monroe Township volunteer Fire Company No. 1, 24 Harrison Ave., Monroe, N.J. 08831.
