Workers met with environmental setbacks this week installing deer reflectors on The Great Road and Rosedale Road.
Contractors ARZ Media Corp. of Union and Illinois-based Strieter Corp. had difficulty installing the 24-inch metal posts to which the reflectors are attached into the rocky shoulders of the roads, said Assistant Township Engineer Deanna Stockton.
The project was expected to be finished this week, but now may be done by the middle or end of next week, Ms. Stockton said.
The Princeton Township Committee unanimously approved spending $200,000 for reflectors on Sept. 13. The decision followed a report presented Aug. 21 by the Deer Management Options Task Force recommending 8.5 miles of reflectors at hot spots in the township.
About 1.5 miles of Strieter-Lite reflectors are being installed on Rosedale Road between Province Line Road and the entrance drive to Constitution Hill, spaced every 40 feet. One mile of the ARZ reflectors is being installed on The Great Road between the Transco gas pipeline right-of-way and Ridgeview Road, spaced every 60 feet.
The township plans to split the cost with corporate sponsors. Caliper Management Inc. in Princeton Township, owned by task force Chairman Herb Greenberg, contributed $4,000.
Additional sponsors are being sought by the task force, said member Aubrey Haines.
Deer reflectors are designed to create a wall of light when struck by a vehicle’s headlight beam to deter deer from crossing the roadway.
