Driver ditches police and stolen car

Police chased the car onto the Trenton Freeway before officers lost sight of it.

Someone driving a stolen car led police on a high-speed chase on Brunswick Pike Sept. 28, which ended when the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle on the Trenton Freeway, police said.
The car, a 1994 Acura Legend sedan belonging to an East Run Drive resident, was recovered by Trenton police following the chase, police said.
Police say the incident started at 2:14 a.m. when an officer noticed the car speeding northbound on Brunswick Pike, near the Crystal Diner. Using radar, the police officer clocked the car traveling at 60 mph in a 40-mph zone.
The police officer, who was driving southbound on Brunswick Pike, turned the patrol car around and tried to catch up to the Acura. The officer’s patrol car paced with the Acura at 75 mph in a 45-mph zone, near Texas Avenue.
The Acura slowed down to a near-stop as it approached a red traffic light at Brunswick Pike at Darrah Lane, then the driver accelerated and drove through the light, police said. The police officer continued to pursue the car.
At the intersection of Brunswick Pike and Franklin Corner Road, the Acura made a U-turn and headed southbound on Brunswick Pike. The police officer followed the car onto the Trenton Freeway, reaching speeds of 90 mph, before the car exited the freeway and the officer lost sight of it, police said.
Township police issued an alert to the Trenton Police Department to be on the lookout for the Acura. A few minutes later, at 2:22 a.m., a Trenton police officer located the car at the corner of Calhoun and Bernard streets. The car had been damaged in an accident, which apparently occurred after the Lawrence police officer stopped his pursuit, police said. A check of the car revealed someone had tampered with the front passenger’s side door lock and the ignition switch.
The owner discovered the car was stolen later, around 7:30 a.m., when he went outside to the parking lot in front of his home where he had left it the night before. The victim found pieces of the door lock on the ground.
The incident is under investigation by police. Those with information can call the Lawrence Township Police Department at 896-1111.
