Horse Play: All in a day’s work

Results from the National Standardbred Horse Show at the Horse Park of New Jersey.

By:
Hundreds of entries from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia made for a busy day at the seventh annual National Standardbred Horse Show at the Horse Park of New Jersey in Upper Freehold.
Many of the Standardbreds in the show, held Sept. 23, were retired racehorses and many were adopted through private placements, but some were adoptees from the USTA/SRF 1999 Alloway rescue in which 26 Standardbreds were saved from questionable fates.
While most of the competitors no longer race, two active racehorses, What A Story and Little Muz, won an under saddle and driving class, respectively. What A Story won at Freehold on Aug. 30 and Little Muz races regularly at Freehold and Pocono Downs.

The scholarship honors Hall of Fame "Sports Eye" columnist Clyde Hirt, who died in 2000.
Any college student in North America with an interest in both journalism and harness racing is invited to apply. Applicants will write an essay of unspecified length about their interest in both and submit it to Dean Hoffman, the editor of "Hoof Beats," at the U.S. Trotting Association, 750 Michigan Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43215. The deadline for submissions is March 1.
Last year’s initial Clyde Hirt Scholarship winner was Chris Roberts of Toronto, Canada.
