FORT DIX — Police are still searching for a male soldier who shot and wounded two other soldiers at Fort Dix Friday.
The shooting occurred at 12:26 p.m. after an argument erupted between three male soldiers, at which time one took out a handgun, said published reports.
One victim was shot in the chest and another in the thigh and abdomen.
The shooter then jumped into a white Chevrolet Impala owned by the Department of Defense and fled the scene, officials said.
Officials are still uncertain what type of handgun was used and where the shooter was headed, said Kryn Westhoven, a spokesman for Fort Dix.
The two wounded soldiers were taken by helicopter to Cooper Hospital in Camden and Capital Health Systems Fuld Campus in Trenton, said Mr. Westhoven.
Mr. Westhoven also said that local and state police were close to apprehending the subject, and more information should be available later in the afternoon.
Fort Dix has been at a heightened state of alert with increased security since the Sept. 11 attacks. For only the second time since the base opened in 1917, all public roads into Fort Dix have been restricted.
