HERBERT F. COFFEY, 74, of the New Monmouth section of Middletown died Sept. 6 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, he resided in New Monmouth for the past 45 years. He was a director of foreign acquisitions for Merck Pharmaceuticals, Rahway, for 35 years, retiring 11 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, in Hawaii and the Philippines. His memberships included the Middletown Board of Health for eight years, and a volunteer accountant for the AARP for 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet Breitkreitz of New Monmouth; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Cynthia Coffey of the Lincroft section of Middletown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Thomas Erbig of Middletown, and Barbara and John Cleary of Lincroft; two sisters, Grace Colino of Lyndhurst, and Rose Marie McCahill of Red Bank; and seven grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, followed by burial at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.

DENIS CLARK HYLAND, 68, of Matawan died Sept. 9 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in New York City, he lived there before moving to Aberdeen in 1963. He was employed in the fields of publishing and music, owned his own music production business, and most recently taught music. He was a communicant of St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, lector, cantor, and minister of care. He served as a journalist in the U.S. Navy from 1955-57. He was predeceased by his first wife, Carol Horan Hyland, in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Faas of Matawan; three daughters, Anne Marie Sparaco of Wayside, Catherine Zavorskas of Aberdeen, and Mary Elizabeth Koewer of Chester; three sons, Denis Hyland of New York City, James Hyland of Toms River, and Terence Hyland of Howell; his sister, Mary Skahill of Broomall, Pa.; his brother, Kevin Hyland of Newtown; and 14 grandchildren. Visitation will be Sept. 12 from 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Holmdel Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, followed by interment at St. Gabriel Cemetery, Marlboro. Memorial donations may be made to the Denis C. GEORGEANNA FLECKNER, 94, of Oceanport died Sept. 8 at home. Born in Englishtown, she lived most of her life in Oceanport. She was a retired manager for New Jersey Bell Telephone. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Shrewsbury Towne Chapter. She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, William P. Fleckner, in January; and her daughter, Marilyn Clayton, in 1977. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janet M. and Robert Frampton of Oceanport; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Interment was at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport.

EVERETT R. "MAT" MATSON, 81, of Oceanport died Sept. 6 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was born in Ladysmith, Wis. He was a retired technician for Bendix Aviation, Eatontown. He served as an aircraft mechanic in France and England during World War II. He was an accomplished clarinetist and studied at the Juilliard School, New York City. He was recognized internationally for his work with clarinet mouthpieces, and included principals of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic among his clients. He was predeceased by his wife, Billie Matson, in 1993. He is survived by two daughters, Karen Judkis of Oceanport and Gail Feaver of Ocean Township; and five grandchildren.
