MONROE Vandals caused between $8,000 and $12,000 of damage after they entered the Mill Lake School and tore through the gymnasium ceiling sometime during the weekend.
Sgt. Paul Banach said the vandals entered the building, got on a piece of equipment used by the construction workers there, and rammed through two sets of doors inside the building. They then went up and through the gym ceiling.
Sgt. Banach said ceiling tiles and lighting were damaged. The vandals also threw tar around the area and the concrete floor.
The damage was discovered by workers Monday morning and police have no suspects. Police said they don’t know how the vandals entered the building.
The new Mill Lake School is part of a $24.5 million expansion and renovation project that includes three other elementary schools. The opening of Mill Lake School was pushed back to January after delays with the completion of the steel framework.
Board of Education President Joe Homoki said the opening of the school will "absolutely not" be delayed as a result.
He said the timetable is still the same for the school and that the repairs can be made while work continues.
