If the responses to a very unscientific Manville News poll regarding a possible name change for Lost Valley are any indication, Manville residents overwhelmingly want to keep the valley "lost."
More than 78 percent of the calls and online responses received urged the borough to keep the name the same. The alternative names suggested Hidden Valley and Pleasant Valley each received two votes in the polling.
Although the name of the valley is not an official moniker, Borough Councilman Martin Wierzba had suggested changing the name in recognition of the changes underway in the neighborhoods there. The poll began on Oct. 4 to gauge public opinion on the matter. Responses were accepted by telephone and online.
Former mayor Rudy Nowak, who worked for many years in the county’s records department, said he recalls maps for the Manville area listing two names for the valley Lost Valley for the area north of Bridge Street and Pleasant Valley for the area south of Bridge Street.
Regardless of how the area came to be called "Lost Valley," most are in favor of keeping it that way.
