Charles Meyer

   EAST AMWELL — Charles A. Meyer died Sunday, Oct. 14, at Monroe Village Care Facility.
   Born in New York, he lived in Maplewood before moving to East Amwell.
   He graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in English in 1937 and was Phi Beta Kappa his junior year. He received a master’s degree in English from Harvard University in 1939.
   He was an Army and Air Force veteran of World War II and was a radar and communications first lieutenant. While in the service, he received engineering training at Harvard and M.I.T.
   He was a technical editor and manager for RCA in Harrison and Somerville from 1946 to 1986 and, after retiring, continued to work for RCA as a publications consultant.
   A senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, he founded and later served as chairman of the first I.E.E.E. professional group for engineering writing and speech. He was a discussion leader for the Great Books Discussion Group at Maplewood Library many years. In 1966, he was elected president of the Board of Trustees of Orange-Maplewood Adult School.
   He was active in the Unitarian Universalist religious movement and was a member of the board of trustees of the First Unitarian Universalist Church at Washington Crossing. He served on the East Amwell Planning Board.
   He is survived by his wife, Helen Wetzstein Meyer; two sons, Richard of Berkley, Calif. and Geoffrey of Minneapolis; a daughter, Judith of Santa Monica, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Benjamin, Alexander and Leland.
   The funeral will be private.
