EAST WINDSOR — The Economic Development Committee is reviewing a proposal to begin an annual community gathering in the fall at Etra Lake Park.
Mayor Janice Mironov, a member of the Economic Development Committee, reported on the proposal at the Township Council’s Oct. 9 meeting. The mayor said two members of the committee — Gabriella Kovacs and Linda Richter — prepared the report and presented it at the committee’s Oct. 4 meeting.
The proposal suggests starting an annual community gathering that will allow the township to showcase its services, allow local businesses and community groups to showcase their goods and services, have a flea market and craft show and provide food and entertainment as a way to foster community togetherness.
The mayor pointed out that the plans are in the earliest of stages, but expressed support for them.
"I think it would be a very positive thing for the town to do," she said. "It lets people come together to learn more about the town … and being a community. It would be exciting to see such an event in town."
Several area municipalities host similar events each year. In June, Washington Township hosts its Community Festival. In the fall, Allentown hosts the Harvest Festival and Lawrence holds Community Day.
Mayor Mironov said Ms. Richter broached the idea of an event similar to those "a few months ago" at an Economic Development Committee meeting and began working on the report with Ms. Kovacs after the committee decided there was enough interest to investigate the idea.
The mayor was hesitant to say if such an event could be put together in enough time to launch the first "township day" next fall.
"We have to look at the practical aspects of how it could come together," Mayor Mironov said. "That’s the challenging part of good ideas."
