Trucks: Leave or slow down

Letter to the editor

To the editor:
You shake my house, rattle my brain and roll me out of bed at 5 a.m.! Is it me, or does it seem that every truck traveling in New Jersey goes through Hightstown on North Main Street? Is anyone using the bypass these days? We could sit back, complain and blame everything on East Windsor and its mayor, or we can take action.
I know the borough has formed a committee to address traffic issues and recently I noticed a new "reduced speed ahead" sign, but currently there is only one 25-mph speed limit sign on North Main Street heading into town and none in the opposite direction. I’m not sure I understand: Is there a shortage of speed limit signs in New Jersey? Additional speed limit signs can only improve the situation.
Also, it’s simply amazing what a parked police car will do to slow down rush hour traffic on weekday mornings (not at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday). Perhaps a roadside speed indicator would be helpful or signs that direct construction traffic away from residential areas as well as signs like the ones on Route 130 (in Cranbury) stating "no engine braking." Our roads weren’t meant to handle these trucks, especially at such high speeds. Every nook and cranny in the road sounds like a crater when the trucks fly by.
Something has to give. If we can’t keep them out of town at least let’s be more serious and consistent about slowing them down!
