School board deserves

to be recognized for work
To the editor:
Because of submission deadlines, we are writing this letter not knowing the outcome of the Dec. 11 school referendum in Washington Township. It is our hope, that the voters of this community did the right thing and supported all three questions.
Regardless of the outcome, the board members and the Washington Township school administration should be commended for their dedication. They have worked tirelessly in the hope of providing the best possible future for all children in our community. They have exhibited true leadership. They have been questioned, criticized and even verbally assaulted and through it all have had the courage to remain true to their convictions.
We know many parents in Washington Township join us when we say thank you for standing up for the children in this community.

Annual Heart Walk

increases awareness
To the editor:

As a Monmouth County resident and businessman, I want to say thank you to Monmouth County. Like all Americans, everyone at the American Heart Association and involved with Monmouth County American Heart Walk was saddened by the tragic events of Sept. 11. Both President Bush and Mayor Giuliani encouraged us to move forward and resume our lives.
Under trying circumstances, we did. American Heart Walk demonstrated the strength and resolve of our communities and people, and I am so proud to share that more than 2,300 people helped raise $225,000 to support the important work of the American Heart Association and its mission to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
Featuring the theme Step Out, Save Lives! — Strengthen the Chain of Survival! through Monmouth County American Heart Walk we brought attention to the importance of "Strengthening Monmouth County’s chain of survival: a four-step process that can mean the difference between life and death for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest or other emergencies.
According to the American Heart Association, at least 220,000 Americans, young and old, die from sudden cardiac arrest annually and the national survival rate is only 5 to 8 percent. A strong Monmouth County "chain of survival" means early 911, early CPR and early defibrillation — all in the first two-to-five minutes after sudden cardiac arrest.
The success of Monmouth County American Heart Walk can be attributed to so many. I want to acknowledge the special contributions to Monmouth County American Heart Walk by national presenting sponsor Archer Daniels Midland Co., makers of the NutriSoy brand; local 2001 event level sponsor Lucent Technologies, red cap level sponsors K. Hovnanian Enterprises and Premier Cardiology; and official media sponsors Cablevision Systems Corporation, News 12 New Jersey, WBWB 90.5 FM and WHTZ 100 FM.
Money raised from American Heart Walk comes back to benefit everyone in Monmouth County. Since 1948, the American Heart Association has invested more than $1.9 billion in cardiovascular research. Thanks to the community’s support of 2001 American Heart Walk more Monmouth County propel will have a fighting chance to beat sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack, heart disease, and stroke.
My sincere thanks go out to the Monmouth County community. Help strengthen Monmouth County’s chain of survival. Learn CPR and support the widespread availability of defibrillators. Please join us at 2002 American Heart Walk. For information about heart disease and stroke, call the American Heart Association at 1-800-AHA-USA1 or visit online at www.americanheart.org.
