Borough man killed when struck by car

LITTLE SILVER — A pedestrian walking his dog on Church Street was struck and killed by a car.

The victim of the accident was identified by police as Thomas Gassert, 73, of 41 Cheshire Square. Police said the driver of the automobile was Albert Abatemarco III, 19, of Carteret.

Police said the accident occurred at about 9:43 p.m. on Dec. 11 as Gassert apparently was crossing the street east of Cheshire Square. Abatemarco was eastbound on Church Street.

Gassert was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, where he was pronounced dead.

The entrance to the Cheshire Square development is off Church Street.

Police said the accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.

Gassert’s dog was not injured, according to police.

Assisting local police at the scene of the accident were members of the Monmouth County Serious Collision Response Team and officers from the Rumson Police Department. Anyone with any information about the accident is asked to call the Little Silver police at (732) 747-5900.
