about Whale Pond Brook

Students from Monmouth University’s School of Education are mentoring and tutoring children from Asbury Park and Long Branch as part of Monmouth’s Partners in Learning (PAL) program. The program focuses on Whale Pond Brook, Long Branch.

"We are teaching these children about coastal streams to raise their awareness of ecology and its impact on the community," said John Tiedemann, an assistant dean at Monmouth. "We chose Whale Pond Brook because it is impaired and Monmouth University is one of its largest neighbors."

There are approximately 65 students, ages 7-14, in the program. Students are from Aslan Youth Ministries, Project Scholar, and Long Branch Middle School. The students study the brook’s aquatic ecosystems and perform organism sampling. They are also taught how to maintain and restore healthy watersheds.
