MONROE Students at Mill Lake School Tuesday sent some holiday cheer to United States troops stationed in Afghanistan.
Seena Kravet, a kindergarten teacher at the school, said she got the idea because Circuit City was allowing customers to videotape their own messages to the troops.
"If you knew someone there, you could have five minutes. If not, then you had 30 seconds. I didn’t think it was worth having a bus ride all the way there for 30 seconds," she said.
So Ms. Kravet brought the camera to the kids, with some suggestions from Circuit City on how to videotape the messages.
"I thought ‘wouldn’t be great for a class to do it,’ "she said.
Her morning kindergarten class got together with some first-graders to tape the first message.
"They said how much the troops mean to them and sang ‘This Land is Your Land,’ " she said.
Her afternoon class teamed up with third-graders, also offering their love and support of the troops, as well as saying the Pledge of Allegiance.
"It was something they really could understand," Ms. Kravet said of her kindergartners.
Ms. Kravet said some of the school’s technical personnel will take the video to Circuit City to make sure it gets where it needs to go.
"It’ll either be sent to the service people or it could be chosen to be shown during the Super Bowl," she said.
She said part of the character unit her students are involved in deals with caring and giving.
"They know how special it makes our service people feel to know we care," she said.
"They understand that this could be a very good gift for someone who is far from home," said Ms. Kravet.
