Salary code
sets municipal
pay for 2002

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — The Township Committee has adopted a 2002 salary ordinance which sets levels of compensation for municipal employees.

The ordinance outlines the pay and increase schedule for a number of employment positions. Each year, municipalities are required to adopt a new salary ordinance.

Township Administrator Thomas E. Antus said creating the new salary ordinance is not a difficult task, as roughly 50 percent of the township’s employees are covered under union contracts that have previously been negotiated.

One such division of municipal employee is the police department. A first-year patrolman makes a $32,620 base salary in Freehold Township. The increase schedule for patrolmen changes a little depending on whether or not an officer was hired prior to Jan. 1, 2000. Patrolmen hired before Jan. 1, 2000, will be making $72,720 in their sixth year with the department. Patrolmen hired after Jan. 1, 2000, do not reach that level of compensation until their seventh year with the force, as per contract negotiations with the police union.

Junior sergeants in the department make $80,865, and senior sergeants are paid $82,565 in base salary.

Sergeants and patrolmen both receive $1,400 annual longevity raises after their fifth year; $2,300 after their 10th year; $2,700 after their 15th year; $3,400 after 20 years; and $3,800 per year after they’ve been with the department for 24 years.

Lieutenants in the police department are paid $91,565; captains are paid $101,315; and the chief of police is paid $112,065.

Administrative positions in the township were also listed in the salary ordinance.

The director of public works is paid between $60,000 and $110,250. The township administrator earns between $75,000 and $125,000 per year, and the deputy administrator is paid between $40,000 and $78,750. The tax assessor is paid between $40,000 and $81,900 each year, and the township’s public information officer is paid between $26,500 and $54,600.

The salary for the township clerk is between $22,500 and $42,000.

The municipal court judge is paid between $55,000 and $99,750 by the township. Municipal attorneys and prosecutors earn between $45,000 and $86,625. The public defender is paid between $15,000 and $28,875.

Township employees from the administrative and part-time sections of the salary ordinance receive the following longevity increases: after five and through 10 years, $1,200; 11-15 years, $1,500; 16-20 years, $2,000; 21-25 years, $2,500; and 26 years and up, $3,000.

The five elected members of the Township Committee are compensated according to the following schedule: the committee member who is chosen to be mayor for the year is paid $9,715 and the remaining four committee members are each paid $8,715.
