JACKSON — Members of the Mayor’s Commission for the Disabled were sworn in last week during the January meeting.

Mayor Michael Broderick, attending with Township Committeeman Michael Kafton, commission liaison, performed the swearing-in ceremonies.

This year’s officers are Vincent Rubio, chairman; Richard Mendel, first vice chairman; Maureen Van Bramer, second vice chairwoman; and Kathy Conway, treasurer.

"We’re looking forward to a very productive and exciting year," Rubio said. "We have several new members who are really excited about becoming part of the commission, as well as those who have been with us for some time and continue to enjoy and involve themselves in the good work that we do."

During the meeting, the 25-member commission, in addition to holding elections for this year’s executive committee, set up this year’s event agenda that will include holiday parties and field trips.

Commenting on the township’s population growth over the past few years, Rubio added, "We want to reach out to the public and let them know about the commission and all that it offers. The client list should be 10 times what it is."

Commission members discussed a larger undertaking to put their efforts into this year, Rubio said, mentioning a new playground for the township’s disabled. One site suggested was adjacent to the Jackson Jungle playground at the township’s municipal complex.

The commission serves Jackson’s disabled community by providing a variety of recreational, educational and social activities, as well as providing non-emergency medical transportation to residents and an equipment lending program. The commission also provides help and information to residents in finding the proper agency responsible in resolving specific problems.

The organization also sponsors a "Helping Hands Program," which is a weekly after-school recreational program held during the school year for children with disabilities. Activities include arts and crafts, cooking, games, movies and library visits.
