HoVal students get DECA awards

AT VALLEY SCHOOLS

   In January, 84 students from Hopewell Valley’s Marketing I and II, Accounting II, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, and Business Administration classes attended the South Blue Regional DECA Conference in Cherry Hill.
   DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is a co-curricular, student-centered organization designed to provide activities that will motivate students to learn marketing, management, and entrepreneurial competencies that will help them become skilled, employable workers.
   There are a wide variety of events in which students can choose to compete.
They include Apparel and Accessories, Business Services, Food Marketing, Full Serve Restaurant Management, Finance, Hospitality, Marketing Management, Quick Serve Restaurant Management, Retail Marketing, Sports and Entertainment, Travel and Tourism and Vehicles and Petroleum. Each student selects one event . The competition includes a 100 question multiple-choice test and two role-plays.
   The following students placed in the top three for the written test in their event: Amy DiDario, first out of 47, Business Services Marketing; Cristin Lyons, second out of 89, Apparel and Accessories Associate Level; Braden Orr and Dave Rout, second out of 29 teams, Financial Services Marketing; Holli Murphy , third out of 62, Retail Merchandising Associate Level; Leah Balerno and Victoria Hujber, third out of 35 teams, Travel and Tourism Marketing.

   The following students placed in the top three for their first role-play: Leah Balerno and Victoria Hujber, first out of 35 teams, Travel and Tourism Marketing.
   The following students placed in the top three for their second role-play: Jennifer Riley, first out of 89, Full Service Restaurant Marketing; Jimmy Gillroy, second out of 45, Marketing Management Services; Grace Yu, second out of 62, Retail Merchandising Associate Level.
   By finishing in the top 20 overall in their event, the following students will go on to compete at the Blue DECA State Conference in February in Cherry Hill. Students who reach the top three in their event in Cherry Hill will go on to compete at the National DECA Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, in April.
