LHS parking program covers 3 more streets

An ordinance that extends the permit parking system established on streets near Lawrence High School gained final approval Tuesday by Township Council.
Three streets — Rydal Drive, Millbrook Lane and Florham Drive — have been added to the list of streets that require a permit for those who wish to park on the street. The three streets are located off either Princeton Pike or Darrah Lane, near the high school.
Township Council approved a permit parking system in September 2001 that allows residents who live on selected streets across from Lawrence High School to park on the street, while it earmarks a handful of parking spaces for nonresidents — generally students or high school staff. The goal was to cut down on the number of high school students who park on those streets.
The permit parking system is in operation during school hours when school is in session.
Rydal Drive, Millbrook Lane and Florham Drive were added to the list after residents complained about high school students who were parking on their street, Mr. Guhl said.
Adding the three streets to the list will force students to seek a permit, he said.
But adding Rydal Drive to the list presents a special problem, Mr. Guhl told the council Tuesday. A podiatrist whose office is on the corner of Rydal Drive and Princeton Pike would have had to obtain permits so his patients could park on Rydal Drive, he said.
So, at the manager’s suggestion, Township Council introduced an ordinance that sets a one-hour limit on parking on a 125-foot portion of Rydal Drive. The ordinance establishes the one-hour parking limit on the south side of Rydal Drive, from its intersection with Princeton Pike.
